Common Use

Aczone is a topical gel primarily used to treat acne vulgaris in adolescents and adults. It contains dapsone, an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent that reduces redness, swelling, and the number of acne lesions.

Dosage and Direction

Apply a thin layer of Aczone gel (usually 5% or 7.5%) to the affected area once or twice daily, as directed by your physician. Wash and dry the skin before application and avoid contact with eyes, lips, and mucous membranes.

Precautions

Use with caution in patients with G6PD deficiency, as there is a risk of hemolysis. Inform your doctor if you have a history of anemia, liver issues, or methemoglobinemia. This medication is for external use only—do not ingest.

Contraindications

Do not use Aczone if you are allergic to dapsone or sulfone-containing medications. It is also contraindicated in individuals with severe anemia or certain blood disorders without close medical supervision.

Possible Side Effect

Common side effects may include dryness, redness, oiliness, or peeling at the site of application. Rare but serious effects include hemolytic anemia, especially in people with G6PD deficiency, and methemoglobinemia. Seek medical help for signs of fatigue, blue lips, or breathing issues.

Drug Interaction

Use with caution if also taking oral dapsone, antimalarials, or oxidizing agents. Benzoyl peroxide used with Aczone may cause temporary skin discoloration (yellow or orange). Always inform your doctor about all skincare and systemic medications you’re using.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose. Do not apply extra to make up for it.

Overdose

Overdose from topical use is unlikely, but accidental ingestion can be serious. In such cases, seek emergency medical assistance immediately.

Storage

Store Aczone at room temperature (20–25°C / 68–77°F). Do not freeze. Keep the gel tube tightly closed and out of reach of children and pets.
